For anyone who attended the series we offered in the Spring some of the topics will be familiar, but please realize that there will be new perspectives offered, new people to interact with, and some material and exersices that were not covered in the previous series.
What is embodied leadership?
In our view being a great leader is not very different from being a really good human being. Leaders build real trust with the people around them, and can be counted on when the going gets tough.
What leaders do is create the conditions for a group or community, to see the possibility of a new future and advance with confidence into the inherent uncertainty of unknown realms. When you actually have capacity to face breakdowns, unplanned opportunities and defeats without loss of confidence then we say you have “embodied” the essential components of leadership. To do this, first you have to be the leader of your own life - then and only then will people choose to follow you.
Arising out of the traditions of martial arts and the "human potential movement” that inspired the founding of Esalen in California during the 1960’s, “somatic practice” (embodied action) has proven amazingly successful as a way for people to awaken their awareness of their “authentic selves.” It has been adapted for personal, institutional and business transformation.
When you speak authentically, from your core, then what you say and how you say it matters. You will need to be able to use language effectively. Human beings are creatures of language, and yet we know very little about how language actually works. The field of “ontology of language” opens up enormous realizations about how we have been creating our own obstacles, when we could be moving through them. Leaders use language to create possible futures and then have them realized.
Participants in the series will get most value by doing all four sessions, but attending even one session on its own will be valuable. Each session will be highly participative, with activities involving movement, group interactions, dialogue and contemplative reflection.
Session 1 – September 11th
Introduction to the practices of embodied leadership – We learn how to always come from “center,” how to awaken energy in our bodies, and use our trained attention, to direct that energy toward accomplishing what we choose to focus on.
Session 2 – October 2
Powerful Language of Leadership – We recognize how much power we are unconsciously “giving away” because of our own disempowering stories and gain insight that will help us choose empowering interpretations. With the practice of declaring ourselves, and language tools for creating possibility we can begin to lead our selves and others with greater confidence.
Session 3 - October 9
Deep Listening and Moving in the World - Listening deeply invites us to practice mindfulness and the skill of focusing our attention where we choose to focus. We embody moving toward our commitments with condfidence
Session 4 – October 30
Leading in the Real World- We begin with an Inquiry into, “What are you facing in the world that is calling for your leadership? What are we as a human family facing in the world that is calling for our leadership? And how can/will we respond?” You will then have the opportunity to experience your unique ways of dealing with pressure, breakdown, distractions as you try to accomplish what you see is possible, and gain insight into how you can truly embody new “tendencies” that could lead to greater accomplishments.
